7 Day Black-Necked Crane Festival

The arrival of black-necked cranes in Phobjikha Valley is deeply spiritual for locals, who see the birds as reincarnations of valley deities. Their circular flight around Gangtey Goempa is viewed as a sacred tribute to the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, marking the start of winter. To honor and protect these endangered birds, the Black-necked Crane Festival is held annually on November 11th, coinciding with the King’s birthday. Launched in 1998 by RSPN and PEMC, the festival raises awareness on conservation while celebrating Phobjikha’s cultural heritage.

Royal Highland Festival

The Royal Highlander Festival in Laya, Gasa District, raises awareness about the decline of traditional yak farming and promotes sustainable economic opportunities for highland communities. Held at 4,000 meters, Laya’s October climate is cold, with temperatures from 1°C to 12°C and freezing nights. Light rain, snow, and strong winds are possible. The trek from Gasa is challenging, so visitors should bring warm, waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear.

Ura Matsutake Mushroom Festival

The Matsutake Festival marks the beginning of mushroom season and takes place in the picturesque Ura Valley during the last week of August. This festive occasion offers visitors a chance to savor delicious Matsutake mushroom dishes, join locals in traditional songs and dances, and gain insight into rural Bhutanese life. Guests can also take part in guided mushroom-picking excursions, learning how to identify these prized fungi firsthand.
